Help !

I'm running XP-Pro and I've been having a strange
problem. While I surf, chat on Messenger or read my
emails with Outlook express I regularily loose my
connection to the Internet but no error message or
nitification appears on-screen.

Furthermore, all the cable-modem lights stay on, exept for
the traffic led which becomes blank. During that
condition I loose my IP address and cannot ping or do
anything on the network at all !

To get out of this I have to open my connection window,
disable it, then re-enable it and I'm back on-line...

I checked with the cable company and they see no problem
at all with my modem, seems it would be a Windows issue.

Anybody out there heard of a problem like this before ????

Thanks in advance !
Michel

I've heard of it with a Asus A7N8X motherboard. Fixed by
a bios upgrade and a change in bios settings. Could
always be a flaky network card.

This is often the first sign that the NIC is failing. However, when
connectivity problems on cable modem arise, the first thing to do is
shut everything down: computers, router, modem. Then power up the
modem, waiting several minutes before restoring power, wait until the
modem reboots, restore power to the router, wait a minute or so, and
then bring up the computers. Test connectivity again.

Michael,

I have found this to be a regrettably common problem with USB connected
cable modems. Several clients of mine (using Motorola SB4100 cable modems)
had this problem. After trying everything else, I installed a NIC for one
and switched to an Ethernet connection. It immediately resolved the issue,
so I did the same for the others, which also fixed their problems.

I have recently seen some other issues with XP losing internet connectivity
for varying reasons , so can't guarantee switching to Ethernet will work for
you, but I'd give it a good odds.

Oh, oh ! That is exactly the modem model my cable
company is renting to me !!!!!

You may have something there GTS !

I will check if I can have it changed over, one of my
good friends works at their service dept. Funnily, I had
a hunch of doing just that, but without technical
background... just a hunch. And I do have a spare
network card :-)

Michel

Their service department doesn't need to do anything on this (unless you
meant that you just want help installing the NIC). I'd be interested in
hearing how it works out for you.
Good luck!

Yeah, I know, I can do that myself, but I need to know
from them if I can exchange it at their many video stores
or if they need to have a tech do it...

That's why I said I would call my buddy. But I'll let
you know.

Michel

The SB4100 already has both a USB and an Ethernet port built in so I'm not
sure exchange you're talking about, but wish you luck.
