PROBLEM PLEASE HELP-=== loosing com3 port on start up -
1 com3 port how come it is not listed as com3 when ports are scanned?
2 have tried changing port number but msg is given they are in use!
3 how to reserve com3 for dialup internet? or block com3 from any other
program taking it?
HAVE HP PAVILLION WITH WIN XP HOM EDITION 2 YEARS OLD
USE DIAL UP MODEM ATTACHED TO COM 3.
FAX, PRINTER NOT CONNECTED
original modem- datafax soft modem with smart cp attached to com3 port- that
came installed was replaced due to this problem with a new modem--PCI softv92
modem attached to com3 port.
on start up in the morning loose com3 port to some other program.
device manager shows no problem. modem cannot be queried because port is
used by some other program!!
task manager do not show any 2 programs are accessing com3 at once.
so far only solution is to do a recovery and when modem is installed modem
gets com3 port!!!!!

Note that most PCs are only delivered with two standard serial ports,
usually set up as COM 1 and COM 2. These usually have been set up as
AUTO in the BIOS. You may want to set the two standard serila ports
to a COM setting instead of AUTO.

COM 1 uses IRQ 4 at hex 3F8 (??)
COM 2 uses IRQ 3 at hex 2F8 (??)

Then, your COM 3 may detect correctly.

smlunatick. thank you for your reply. went into the BIOS but it doesnot even
mention or show serial port for me to change it. it only mention parallel
port. do you know how i can find serial in hp pavilliona1520y with winxp so
that i can tryassigning a port number. thank you.

So no built-in serial ports???

Check in Device Manager, under Ports for any Com 1 / Com 2 entrys. If
none are listed, then you should re-configure the soft modem to use
Com 1. I have encountered some Windows set ups where the missing Com
1 / 2 entries did cause the Com 3 from working correctly.

thanks. device mgr shows-- ports ( COM & LPT)-- ECP Printer
Port(LPT1)--under printer properties -- Ports show 3 LPT Ports and 4 COM
Ports. in modem properties--advanced settings for com3 in the drop down box
256 com ports are listed. the modem port that came with the computer was
attached to com3 and one that i'm using is also came attached to com3 port.
thank you.

How many "true" COM ports do you have? Most "older" motherboards tend
to have two standard COM ports (COM 1 / 2) built in. When you add a
standard PCI based modem, this tends to be set to COM. If Device
Manager lists out 256 COM ports, you should start cleaning up these.
Remove all of then and the reboot XP. Your XP should then re-detect
the true COM ports.

"smlunatick", thank you. for some reason modem is ok, updates are installed,
restarted several times com3 ok. serial driver has no yellow mark in device
mgr.I will shut off the computer tonight and if it starts in the morning with
modem port available hope fully com3 port mystery is resolved.
thank you for the help.
