Just hooked up first XP Pro pc on 40 user network.
Network is W98, NT4, W2K. This is the first XP Pro that I
have configured but have used XP home pc on another
client's network just fine. The problem is I that don't
know if something is different in XP pro that could cause
this or if the new toshiba laptop is the cause.
The netgear switch is a 24 user switch, FS524. It has one
light for 100, one light if port connected to a live NIC
and one light when port is passing traffic. When this
toshiba is hooked up it works fine but the switch lights
all start pulsing on and off like the hub is being so over
loaded it is recycling itself. Other users start getting
fragmented packets as this happens. Three 3com cards died
today and had to be replaced. When the Toshiba is removed
from the network everything settles back down except for
the damaged cards which went into permanent broadcasts. I
don't know if they had gone bad from power outages
recently, this situation or gradual death.
It is hard to believe that the toshiba could cause so much
damage but I have no other explanation. The minute it
gets hooked back up to any port, all 24 port lights, the
10/100 lights and the transmit lights start acting like
someone is unplugging and plugging in the unit about every
2 or 3 seconds. Normally when a card is bad it shows up
as giving constant traffic on the light that shows traffic
on that card rather than causing the switch to hemorage
like it is. Even the lights that show the other 23 cards
are connected are turning off. I have never had one do
this - does XP Pro have some kind of a setting that makes
it act differently than other NICs on prior MS OS? W2K
machines do fine. NT4 MCSE.
