I had my new Usenet addy up for only 18 hours. Already I got a fail notice
on an e-mail sent with that address (now disabled).
It had an html message that looks like it's really Microsoft, but, as we all
know, they never send e-mail updates. And it had an .exe file attached.
Should fool a lot of newbies.

What made you think that it wasn't an old and familiar
swen or gibe variant?

My swen message stopped completely very suddenly about a month or 6 weeks
ago, so I assume there must have been some sort of cutoff date. I had munged
my email address when they first started in September or so.

FWIW: A new addy is not necessarily "new" to 'net. Was the addy
reasonably random sequence of alphanum and specials (vs.
something a la john@zxyz)?

A local computer guy is making a killing on that one. He builds and sells
computers at the local flea market. So far, he's done close to 100 repairs
of systems affected by that virus - at $100 a pop. One network admin let the
thing through Norton Firewall and it ate a server and 68 computers. He
charged them $6800 to fix it. Never had to leave his home to do it.

Murphy's law, the Peter Principle, and a famous quote by P.T. Barnum
all apply. ;o)

They are still coming in.

Quoth the raven named Frans Meijer:
They are still coming in.

You are still posting an apparent valid email address in Usenet.

Swen harvests these addresses. [ swen <--> news ]
