Looking to make a tiny file size with webcam

I was wondering if anybody can suggest a free program from
download.com or whatever for making small video files with my
quickcam. I want to make an avatar for some forums. Like around 50k
size.

I think I need something that changes avi to gif which might do it,
any suggestions on a good (free) program for that?
