I am looking into a new LCD Monitor.
I will run it with a 256mb eVGA GeForce 6800gs AGP.

My question is about the "wide screen" choices.
Are they compatible or are they "specialized"?
Will my card run them?
Is there any advantage or disadvantage?
What are some good buys right now on wide and regular screen?
Brands?
Models?
Is DVI capability important?
I also game, so no ghosting please.

Thanks for any suggestions.

All of the wide screen LCD monitors up through 20
inches are not tall enough. To get back to the same
height as you would get in a standard 19 inch LCD
screen, you have to go to a 23 inch wide screen.
That gives you an LCD monitor that is viewable
from a distance of 6 feet for TV and DVD movies
which use wide screen .. or standard screen.
If you are viewing from a distance greater than 6
feet, then you need an LCD-TV of around 27 inches
or better. At that point, you want to ask the question,
can I view that TV-monitor combo from 2 feet for
desktop apps and games ? You can if the resolution
of the monitor is high enough. WATCH OUT for
the 640 x 480 LCDTVs. They are crap. I've looked
at the Sharp LCD-TV, which has a fairly high resolution,
and I think it might work as a desktop, but I'm not
sure. And there, the Sharp only has a speed of 16 m
sec .. which is too slow for DVD or gaming.
So, it is a real guessing game right now as to which
LCD - monitor - TV is capable of doing all it needs
to do. You need:
8msec
1600x resolution
at least 23 inches wide
DVI input for PC apps and pci tv-tuner for PVR
direct cable input for TV and also that tuner
picture in picture and side by side
stereo speakers for either setup ... tv-tuner, or
direct cable tv sound .. possibly built in ??
Cost around $600 instead of $2000

Available right now ????

for LCD-TV
16 msec
1300x resolution
all the 23+ inchers are nearly $1000
most have only analog VGA input
very few will do picture in picture well .. the
resolution is awful. You can't view them at
2 feet.

for LCD-desktop
8msec
1600x resolution
under 23 inches is not viewable from 6 feet
price is nearly $1000 again
no cable TV tuner built in .. and most of the
pci tv-tuners have sound-video sync problems.
You want the pci tv-tuner for PVR, not for just
viewing TV. With a built in tv-tuner, you can
both watch tv and download PVR .. and with
side by side, you can do apps and cable tv
with no sound-video sync problem.

Those guys know what we want, but they are
not going to give it to us for some reason.
Only thing I can think of is they think we
are using dual monitors .. and we certainly
could do that ... for double the price.

I agree with that. Mine is slightly over 20" and I have rotated it to get
the greater height. Now, I scroll up and down less.

I am looking to get a tv tuner and the funny thing is, my monitor is larger
than the tv in the bedroom. The bedroom tv, glass only, is 19" and my
monitor is 20.1" diagonally.

The only issue with buying an lcd right now is the industry is coming out
with a new standard, display port, to replace dvi. Manufacturers kind of
forcing us to upgrade at some point.

Yup, the diagonal measurement is tricky, gotta watch out for it. A 19"
widescreen has a lot smaller viewable area than a 19" standard 4:3 format
LCD screen. But you see vendors proudly proclaiming (WIDESCREEN!) like it's
a great feature. In reality, you just pay more for a smaller (but wider)
monitor, if you buy widescreen. -Dave

Read the whole thing .. thanks. The Acer "multimedia"
20 inch monitor is the right idea. And Tom's Hardware
says the 23 inch monitors are getting there with sharpness
and viewability up close as a desktop. Still, the price is
a joke. It is just a piece of plastic, folks ! The industry
knows we are after a good viewable multimedia desktop
monitor with both cable TV and PVR at the same time,
and still very capable in games and dvd movies. I'm in
the market for a single monitor that will do what a combo
of my Viewsonic VX924 19 inch gaming monitor with
PVR .. and a wide screen LCD-TV viewable by 2 people
at 6 feet can do. And it needs to run apps clearly in
picture in picture, or side by side. Acer is taking a
respectable shot at it, but Acer is still ACER !!!!! And
that is just too bad.
