I volunteer with an organization that has about 20 computers linked
through a LAN using Microsoft software and an ethernet protocol. We
have lost track of the software that has been installed on the
machines and need to do an inventory. We do know that the operating
systems vary from Win 98 to the latest versions. We have heard that
there is software that we can run that will tell us all the software
on each of the computers. Can anyone suggest some software, perhaps
some freeware that will help us do this?

Not sure that this is the right newsgroup. If not would you direct me
to the correct newsgroup.

There was a thread about inventory software further up. There were 4
options proffered, none of which seem exactly tailored to your use:
1) A search for .com and .exe files; excluding windows and download
directories would give a pretty complete list of the sw installed on that
computer.
2) Karen's Computer Profiler:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptprofiler.asp
....has an installed sw tab. You'd have to run round all the puters
yourself though.
3) Belarc Advisor ( for free personal use only. Use on multiple PCs in a
corporate, educational, military or government installation is
prohibited.):
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Registry-based so doesn't pick up EVERYTHING installed. Apparently picks
up more than:
4) jv16 PowerTools:
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/jv16powertools.shtml
The registry tool will apparently do you a list of sw; again registry
based.
