Hey everyone I'm currently using Windows XP switched from Linux for a
multitude of reasons, and one of the main Desktop enhancing functions I
found in linux I liked better than windows is the ability to Shade and
Unshade a window in just about every desktop environment. What I want to
know is if there is a freeware utility that adds this function to a windows
window? It would be very handy and make me feel right at home.

TIA

If you would feel right at home, then you should have stuck with linux.

That aside, I *think* that some of the alternate shells for Win (i.e.
LiteStep?) offer modules that accomplish this. Start with
http://desktopian.org/ and take it from there.

Believe me I wish I could have stuck with windows but for reasons that irk
me to think about my work has all but forced us to migrate to windows, I
still have my other Slackware box, I was just trying to make windows more
"bareable".

There's also "winroll", but I don't know if this works with XP.

Excellent, this is more what I was looking for, but actual titlebar buttons
lite is a nice little app as well, I'll have to add them both to my toolbox.

You may also want to check out PowerPro.

Shading is only one of the many things it lets you do.
Think: running commands, controlling other program's windows and
providing utility functions.
Very configurable and scriptable. Pricelessware.

I'd second the suggestion of using an alternate shell. Most
of them are free.

There are many out there, and even some that emulate Linux
window managers. (BB4win and Bluebox emulate Linux's
Blackbox for instance - even some of the configs are
portable.)

Have a look at:
http://shells.loose-screws.com and
http://shell-shocked.org/shells.php (my site)
for some comparative reviews and previews.

If you have any questions about shells, feel free to post
them here.

Unfortunately after a few days of usage, winroll is a bust. It has an
annoying bug with classic explorer theme, if you right click the taskbar
the taskbar goes crazy and explorer consumes 100 percent of your cpu. As
long as your not using Classic Theme in XP your fine. Just a heads up.

I really can recommend Litestep as an alternative shell. There are
numerous themes available to suit your taste, and it is inherently
extensible with modules. A new installer was released recently and
the whole package is very stable at this point. It actually started
out as an "AfterStep-for-Windows" project, but it has evolved towards
greater customizability than AfterStep these days. I use it at work
and at home and have not had any problems with it.

More information:

Look for WinRoll. I've been using it with WinXP for months and it is
flawless.

An alternative shell is almost a must for someone migrating
from *nix and feeling at loose ends in the windows world.

You can customize quite a lot with shells like Litestep. I
recommend that one, but it's not your only choice.

There are several more - see

I've seen at least a dozen utilities that shade and used a few, but I
don't know which are XP compatible.

BTW, WinRoll was recently updated to 1.7. Don't know if that will
make any difference..

WinShade ???
http://www.bluecarpet.com/docs/winshade.html

Does anyone know the current status of WinShade? I thought I had read
that it was freeware now, but I can't place the reference.

WinShade - WinShade is a desktop utility that allows you to take
control of your windows. Using WinShade you can assign commands to
your mouse buttons including minimize, maximize, "Rollup/Unroll",
"Send to bottom", "Maximize Vertically", and "Keep on top". The
"Rollup/Unroll" command is unique to WinShade and allows you to shrink
a window such that only the title bar will remain visible. The
"Maximize Vertically" command is also unique to WinShade and allows
you to expand a window in the vertical direction while leaving its
horizontal position and width the same.

MinMaxExtender
http://www.geocities.com/revenger_inc/mmext.html
http://www.geocities.com/revenger_inc/mmext121.zip

"... we recommend searching Simtelnet mirrors. The versions on
Simtelnet can be outdated though." I don't think that will be a
problem -- all development was discontinued in July, 2003. Note, open
source.

(Site excerpt)
MinMaxExtender is a utility that enhances the standard windows, adding
new buttons next to the Minimize button in the titlebar. Using the
buttons, the user can stretch the window across the screen, hide it to
a trayicon, hide all of the window apart from the titlebar or make the
window stay on top of others. The user can exclude some windowtypes
from beeing extended and choose which buttons to be visible.

DialogMate
http://www.weird173.net/apps/dlgmate.html

This one is not quite what you wanted but might be of interest.
VirtualPlastic has a post saying several more features have been
added.

(Site excerpt)
DialogMate provides 4 Windows enhancements that helps in every day
work. With DialogMate you can minimize windows to floating icons
(unique feature) freeing task bars and tray bars space. Besides,
DialogMate can minimize window to tray, or to make them always
standing on top, over all other windows. Moreover, DialogMate helps
with Open/Save dialog boxes, by providing favorites files and folders
menu.

I'd look at VirtualPlastic.net or Shell Extension City (shellcity.net)
if these don't pan out.

bluecarpet.com seems to have pulled itself off of the Net. Their
homepage now says that they have a "new website coming soon". A bad
sign...

Found the reference (see last paragraph). Clipped this a couple of
months ago. My memory is going but not yet gone.

WinShade
WinShade is a Windows 95/NT 4 desktop utility that gives you control
over your windows. With WinShade you can assign various commands to
mouse button clicks that occur on window title bars. These commands
include minimize, maximize, "Rollup/Unroll", "Send to bottom", "Keep
on top", and "Maximize Vertically". The "Rollup/Unroll" command allows
you to "roll up" the window into its title bar, leaving only a thin
horizontal window on the desktop. You can click back on the rolled-up
window's title bar at any time to restore the window to its previous
dimensions. The "Send to bottom" feature allows you to send any window
to the bottom of the window stack, while the "Keep on top" command
will make a window stay on top of all the other windows. WinShade
works with almost all top level windows, including dialog boxes and
maximized windows. Customizable options include the ablity to remove
the tray icon, change the way various commands are activated, and
assign sounds and hot keys. WinShade comes with a complete help system
and can easily be installed or removed.

I completely forgot about FreeShade, 2001 Pricelessware. In addition,
the WireKeys developer, WiredPlane (.com), has said that
rollup/shading will be added in the very near future.

If you try several of these (FreeShade, WinRoll, WinShade,
MinMaxExtender, PowerPro, DialogMate, or some other application),
please let us know how they affected performance.

FreeShade

Released version : still 1.003
http://www.hmmn.org/FreeShade/#download
Beta version : 1.004beta7

The beta version of 1.004 is even better than 1.003, so download it

FreeShade's basic reason for existence is to provide window shading
for Windows.

Maximize windows vertically or _horizontally_, rather than just
grabbing the whole screen. ... non-rigid maximize, which means a
window will grab most nearly all of the screen, but unlike a regular
maximize, you can still move the window around.

Have the window hug one of the screen's sides or corners, either
jumping or stretching to the new location.

Keep the window on top of other windows, either just when the window
is shaded or all the time.

Display info about the process which the window belongs to.
Forcibly stop the process which the window belongs to.

-------------------------------------
Make that --> was added to the last release.

Guess I'll have to reset the frequency of the reminder to check for
updates. The revision was already available.
If you try several of these (FreeShade, WinRoll, WinShade,
MinMaxExtender, PowerPro, DialogMate, or some other application),
please let us know how they affected performance.
