Consider NVu:

Considered by many in this group to be the best:

WYSIWYG Web Builder - This project started as a replacement for
Frontpage Express that used to be part of Windows. Just a simple,
easy-to-use utility to generate web pages. Web Builder has almost all
the features Frontpage Express had, but gives you much more freedom of
where you put your web objects (such as images, text, tables etc). This
means that the finished page will display in your browser exactly the
way it was designed. The program generates HTML (HyperText Markup
Language) tags while you point and click on desired functions; you can
create a web page without learning HTML. Just drag and drop objects to
the page position you want and when you're finished publish it to your
Web Server (using the built in Publish tool).

Features:
- No HTML knowlegde needed!
- Drag and drop of the HTML objects: Text, Lines, Images, Marquees and
Tables.
- Form layout object to create forms, including actions, hidden fields
etc.
- Supports Form fields: Editbox, TextArea, Checkbox, Radiobutton,
Combobox and Button.
- Rich text support: text object can contain different fonts, colors,
links and sizes.
- Option to add custom HTML for each object (Before Tag, Inside Tag,
After Tag).
- Custom HTML object.
- Scripting object (VbScript and Javascript).
- ActiveX, JAVA, Flash, Windows Media player, Quicktime and other
Plug-In support.
- Publish to local drive or a FTP server.
- Images can be drag'n dropped from explorer on the document to speed up
development.
- Easy Photo Gallery creation.
- Banners.
- Rollover images.
- Bookmarks.
- Customize scrollbar colors for Microsoft Internet Explorer.
- Meta tags.
- Printing/Print preview.
- Clipboard Copy/Cut/Paste.
- Aligning functions.
- Undo/Redo.
- and much more!

WYSIWYG Web Builder - This project started as a replacement for

Does this product build solid, HTML compliant web pages that will display
properly in any browser?

the best IMHO.

This produces awful HTML, using "behind the scenes" tables and spacer gifs
for layout. Plus it can't edit existing HTML pages -- it's a "one way"
program. Better recommendations:

NVu. See elsewhere in this thread for url.

PageBreeze. http://www.pagebreeze.com/ . My favourite -- very similar to the
old Frontpage Express.

WebDwarf. http://www.virtualmechanics.com/products/dwarf/ . Note this is
also a "one way" program but at least it uses compliant CSS for layout. This
can produce sophisticated effects not possible with the two above BUT older
browsers may not render the page correctly so be judicious with "special
effects."

I'd take the old Frontpage Express -- a freebie still available on some
sites -- before I used Web Builder.

but are any of these drag and drop ? an html beautifier seems to help with
the code generated by webuilder

I'm unable to find any info on Nvu's system requirements for Windows.
Probably wouldn't go well on a Win95a, Pentium I 90Mhz, for instance . .
.. Any clue as to minimum system requirements?

Pagebreeze does not support drag and drop from Explorer. NVu does allow you
to drag (although I don't know if you can drop from Explorer) if you use
layers (which involves css). That's why I stopped using NVu as I found the
css features clunky and buggy.

Based on Web Dwarf I actually forked out for Sitespinner's commercial
product, but I believe most of the common functions operate similarly.
Sitespinner does support drag and drop totally so I would expect Web Dwarf
does as well.

Can you give an example of such a beautifier? I doubt it replaces the tables
and spacer gifs as it has no way of knowing whether they represent poor
code, or an intended effect by the author. Beautifiers tend to fix syntax
errors, not poor layout code. I could be wrong though so would like to test
for myself.

BTW, combine Webdwarf with PSPad's (also freeware) feature for cleaning and
tidying up HTML and you've got yourself a potent combo. PSPad will also
reformat the internal CSS. You can then copy and paste to a separate file
for use as external stylesheet. For a site with multiple pages, that ensures
consistency of look across your site. You can then tweak this stylesheet
with TopStyle Lite (also freeware) at any time to instantly change the look
and feel of your entire site.

Also forgot to mention Trellian as a wysiwyg editor. Been awhile since I
used it but I have good memories of that one too. Don't have a url and I
think the latest version is shareware, but someone here mentioned the
freeware version is still floating around.

I've been using Trellian's WebPage for a while - it's free & it's great.
