Looking for the impossible printer?

My HP 710c just gave up its ghost. It was very good with text but not so hot
with the occasional color print I need to make. What I liked about it was
its simplicity and its 42 ml black ink cartridge that seemed to last
forever.

I just bought a cheap Canon i450 but I am concerned how long the 8 ml
(eight!) black cartridge will last.

What I am really looking for is a (cheap) simple printer with a (cheap)
large black cartridge and a (cheap) smallish color cartridge.

Is there a printer on the market that comes close to my needs? - Well, did
not hurt to ask.

The Canon i550 or i560.

The black cartridge is only 26 mL
but the Canon brand retails for just $12.99
about half the cost of a #45 cartridge for the
HP 710c. The color cartridges in these printers
(there are 3, 1 for each color) hold 13 mL
of ink each and run about 10.99 per cartridge
(all three cost about the same as one #23 cartridge)

There are several advantages to these printers:

1. There are third party options available for both
the i550 and i560 including Refill Kits, compatible
cartridges, and Continuous Re-Inking Systems.

2. Both printers offer superior photo printing and
faster print speed over the HP 710c.

3. Both printers are inexpensive. the i560 is available
in stores now for about $129.00 with some stores
offering a $30.00 rebate. The i550 is currently
being discontinued, but is still available in some locations
but can easily be found on Ebay for as little a $63.00
brand new.

Information about both printers is available here:

About the only disadvantage I see is the lack of
easy to obtain printheads, they are considered
a technician serviced item. However for $30.00
at Best Buy or $50.00 direct from Canon
you can get 3 years coverage on the
printhead (and the rest of the printer). I recommend
such a warranty for convenience if nothing else.
(I use the Best Buy X warranties myself).
