Hey all,
I am looking for a good program that I can use to make copies of my
system that will only copy the data and not the whole hard drive.
I have used "Ghost", but that copies the whole drive and an 80 gig HD
is a lot to be coping.
Any suggestions are welcomed.

Ghost is the only tool you need. Ghost can clone a drive, back up a hard
drive, or back up select folders/volumes.

perhaps you should read the help files on the Ghost CD.

Well, an 80GB drive is only a lot to be copying *if* you have 80GB of files.
heh

Symantec/Norton Ghost, Acronis TrueImage and other such tools can do whole
disks or just partitions - the "retail" version of ghost also has other
possibilities available - but you have to learn.

The built in backup will work if you are wanting to do certain files/folders
or just system state, etc.

Retrospect comes with many external drives for just such a purpose as you
propose.

Otherwise - google for what you are wanting and when you find an interesting
product - google for reviews and opinions on that product from external
sources.

You have data files, and you have your Operating System and
applications files. Off hand, I can't think of any other way of
classifying the contents of your drive. Depending on how much you have
installed, the OS and applications will not usually even approach 10GB,
so these will typically constitute a relatively small percentage of the
total contents of an 80GB drive.

If your intention is to backup only the same selected files regularly,
you may want to consider creating a separate partition and putting
these files there. Then you can easily backup the partition using one
of the products mentioned in previous replies.

Where are you planning to copy the data to? If this is to a second drive or
you create a second partition you can use the NTBackup program that is
installed on XP Pro or available to Home users either on the XP Home CD or
from here http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#backup_home . But
be advised that this app will not save directly to CD or DVD without
additional software.

For just a quick backup of files, try having a look at the new Nero 7
program, this has a backup feature that will span it across multiple CD/DVD's.
