Looking for split-screen multiple desktops?

At work I've got a big monitor (19" LCD) and I don't need my apps
to fill the whole screen when I hit the maximize button. Does
anyone know of any screen-splitting freeware? I'd like to split
the screen into a 15" area for my main windows, but also have a 4"
area to the left and a 4" area at the top for smaller windows that
I want to keep visible.

I guess what I'm asking for is a multiple-desktops utility that
shows 2, 3, or 4 of the desktops at once in split-screen mode.
