Hello,

I would like to put together a multimedia system: specifically for creating
digital videos:
I am assuming large hard disk, DVD burner and as much ram as possible,
Firewire interface.

Are there any particular video and audio boards - I should look at?

All inputs would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Joseph

I would use the RAID setup for hard drives for faster times....you'd need
atleast two identical drives.... and also using a SCSI interface instead of
the usual IDE...

I guess it could always help! sorry =0(

Why scsi or even raid? DVD burning and DV capture takes much less bandwidth
than even a single IDE drive can handle easily.

Thanks Stacey & FuzionMan,

Does that mean - Digital Video (DVD burning - DVCapture) does not require
any
special hardware - other than a fairly robust system?

Correct. In my opinion, I'd say very solid basic requirements would be:

2.0+ GHz CPU
80 or 120GB hard-drive (or even 2+ hard-drives, one for the O.S., one for
the saved AVIs)
512MBs of RAM, at least
Firewire card (PCI)

As FuzionMan pointed out, a RAID setup would definitely help. With video
editing, hard-drive performance is a must, which is why some high-end setups
use SCSI. But with IDE RAID, you get performance very similar, if not
better.

Thanks @drian

If you using DV through firewire there is no "special" hardware other than a
firewire card needed. WIn98SE/Win2K can get by with 256meg but XP needs
512meg to run good. Intel P4's with SSE2 work better than AMD's for this
one application by quite a bit using modern software. I'm a big fan of
vegas video for editing. I'd go with a P4 2.4 800 or better. Also at least
a single 80gig 7200RPM 8meg cache drive with 2 drives (1 storage, 1 system)
is better but not required. I'm using a 2.4/533 with a single 80 gig drive
and never had any problems..

Raid isn't needed and for some people, it introduces weird artifacts etc
into the video. Unless you are moving files between raid arrays (not sure
why anyone would be doing this?) there is no advantage to using raid and
only potential problems. The only place the high end systems use raid/scsi
in for a storage array to gain drive size/speed for copying files for
storage.

Stacey,

Thank you very much for the details. One question - wrt to software is there
an advantage for XP
over W2000 or NT ?

Regards
Joseph

Some of us like to go fast though....
Like for example, would you buy a Saturn and take it to the dragstrip or
would you get a supercharged 69 Corvette 454 and just plain outrun
everybody? Just an example that's all....

LOL!

I'd hire a Ferrari 6.8 V12. Then I could race and listen to the music of
the exhaust...

Better example, which of these would you trust to drive across the country
if you aren't "just a car nut"? My point is unless you just want to work
out the possible problems which may arrise, there is no =need= for raid
with video editing.
