Hi All

Has anyone seen an OS that can reside on a cd, bootup and allow one to use
the machines hardware..modem, cd-r-wr..

It would be a nice tool to have, when Microsoft craps out, I could place
this cd into drive and bootup, get to me mail, browse, maybe even print a
letter?
TIA

Many of the Linux Live Distributions do this, most notably knoppix.

Tom's boot disk does most of this on a single floppy.
http://www.toms.net/rb/ I always have it handy. Pretty
amazing.

Other boot disks are at bootdisk.com. Most work well, and will
get the CD drive up and working quickly for emergency work or
reinstalling Windows.

As already stated, Knoppix (.net) works as well. If you're on
dial up or can't make an ISO CD, you can always have it mailed
to you for about $5.00 from someplace like cheapbytes.com.
Knoppix works best with PCs that have been out for a while, so
people have figured out and incorporated drivers for the
hardware. Brand new PC models (like the one I just got) have
equipment so new it is often not recognized by the hdw setups.
With Knoppix you will need to learn how to (for example) do
things like make the hard drive writeable (default = read
only).

The very best is a "light version" of Ms Windows 200 or Xp that will fit and
run from a single CD. You will need you original Ms install disks and this
program which extracts the necessary files (allowing you to add WPs CD
burners File Managers etc.) which then creates an .ISO file which you burn
to CD.

The Program is Bart's PE Builder http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a
graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support.

Bart deserves an award for this innovative and priceless (freeware)
idea.Which unfortunately has not recieved the recognition it deserves
because it looks a bit too techie for the point-n-click masses.

Thanks to all,
I d/l Knoppix, it works great!, this is just what I was looking for.
Maybe this should be nominated as pricelessware under the heading OS.

I burned the bootable cd, placed in drive and was online in about a
minute. The disk found my network (at work), my sound card, graphics
card, everything worked fine.

At home I had a similar experiance, was able to dialup on a 56K modem in
minutes.

MSFT provides such a single CD utility for WinXP. it is
available through the developer network. I have and tried it out
only once - worked as advertised.

Try Puppy Linux, it's bootable off a USB thumb drive

I concur. I tried Knoppix last week and it worked flawlessly. VERY cool.
