Looking for Novel Writing software

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend software for helping authors
write their novels.

Something that helps plan chapters, record character details etc.

Possibly The Literary Machine (free version)?

I've used all three of those recommended so far. YWriter is the only
one that's set up to let you write a novel by chapters and scenes, enter
goals and so forth for each scene, etc. I like those features, but it's
unfortunately somewhat clunky to use. The actual writing is done in a
plain text editor -- no rtf -- and it only seems possible to do
cut-and-paste and similar operations via keyboard shortcuts. No icons
or right-click menu. Still, it's the closest to what you're asking for.

RoughDraft is mostly a plain word processor but with a sidebar that lets
you have notes associated with each document and do a few other things
that are useful for writers.

Literary Machine is a program I use to store research notes, since it
has a keyword system that makes it easy to find meaningful connections
among scattered jottings. But although the documentation says you can
use it for writing longer pieces, I think it would be extremely clumsy
for the purpose.

Another programs I'm trying out for writing is Pepys. It's a wiki-style
program that lets you easily set up a web of hyperlinked files. Like
the others, it's a little crude, but it seems excellent for doing
certain things very quickly and smoothly.
