I haven't purchased a mainboard since I went for the original P4T back when
the P4 was new. Needless to say, the 1.8 ghz P4 that I have with 2gb of
RIMM memory needs upgrading at this point. I haven't kept up with Asus
technology or mainboards available since then.

Can anyone recommend a good mainboard/processor (Intel variety) combination,
including an Asus mainboard? What are the most popular combos these days?
I am looking to put together a 2.8 or higher ghz machine with 2gb of main
memory (probably now sdram). I kick myself in the butt for going with RIMM,
but just had to have one of those first P4's off the line several years ago.

Thanks for any feedback available. I am looking to do this with existing
hard drives and peripherals (AT133 drives, Radeon video board, etc) and just
swap out mainboard and processor and memory.

Since cost does not seem much of an object, I'd go with a P4C800-E
Deluxe and a P4 3.0C...3.2C (preferably a Northwood and not one of those
"E" Prescott heatings).

I'd guess i865 + P4 around 2.8C.

And probably the CPU cooler as well. You might want to go with some
Thermalright offering (SLK8xx/9xx) and an 80x80x25 fan w/ some
2000..2600 rpm nominal (or a somewhat slower 92x92x25).

BTW, a really fast system deserves a 74 gig Raptor. With the P4C800-E
supporting SATA, connecting it should not be much of a problem.
