Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a modem to use with RAS, and I'm interested in
hearing from pretty much everyone, on what is the most reliable modem and
which ones I should stay away from. You can email me at hemmingway at shaw
dot ca (in the form of an email address of course) or remove the
"_REMOVE_SPAM_O_MATIC_" from the email address if replying to this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

an external serial modem is usually about the safest choice for reliability
with most any OS

other than that, i'd keep away from those inexpensive "win-modems"

some will work ok however...such as USR

OTOH, those Lucent win-modems that seem to work fine with win9x
have not been very reliable for win2k...at least in my experience

Winmodem, internal: get a Conexant-chipset (any kind)
Internal hardware modem: USRobotics, Hayes, Conexant
PCMCIA card: USRobotics/3COM/
But external USrobotics or Hayes are the fastest, most-
reliable. Since todays PCs are starting to really lose the
legacy serial/parallel ports, that external serial may not
be a long-term option.

Thanks guys,

I'm already aware of the "Nasty Win-Modem". I am partial to hardware
modems, but hear that they can sometimes not drop the line when you hang up,
which could be a problem with reliability. I have also heard from a
ModemSite survey that a Rockwell / Conexant ACF chipset is what to look for
as far as the gamers are concerned. I figured if it's good enough for
gamers, it should be good enough for what I want to use it for. The problem
is, I can't seem to find a "Rockwell / Conexant ACF" modem, and can't find a
list of modems that contain that chip set.

I'd still like to hear more feedback if possible, what's everyone using for
their RAS connections?

Thanks!
RWC
