My mom is considering getting a laser printer and she is a dyed-in-the-wool
black text person who sees no known reason to use color (she should get her
eyesight checked). What would be a good laser printer to select these days? She
is budget-minded, but we don't know what is out there that won't print pages
that run like mascara on a lightly-drizzly day. If there is a scanner/printer
combo, that is included in our search also (but B & W?, really?).

HP LJ 1220 is a Copier/Scanner/printer. Also check out the Canon Laser All in
One. I saw one in Sam's club for less than $300. A good used LJ 1200 and then buy
the Copier/Scanner Assembly and add it and you get a LJ 1220.

I have two suggestions:

a) Look at printers (or combos) that require changing only
of the toner, not the whole toner + drum cartridge. These
are usually a little more expensive than the cartridge
replacement types, but in the long run they cost less to
operate.

b) Go to a locally owned business/office supply store, and
see what they offer as service contracts on the machines
they sell. You may pay more up front, but again, overall
cost of ownership will be lower - plus you get the peace of
mind of knowing that the machine will be fixed if it
breaks. BTW, if you mother does a lot of printing (500
pages/month and up), a lease + service contract may
actually be cheaper overall. Generally speaking, you should
never think of purchase price as determining how cheap a
printer is. Businesses don't. :-)
