Adware then, not freeware.

It's self-advertising. The group consensus was that self-advertising is
not *Adware*. The Adware definition was "rolled back" and currently reads:

"Adware: software that displays advertising for other products and/or
services (often downloaded from the internet by the software)."

As yet the ware glossary doesn't include a definition for self
advertising apps - logoware or brandedware have been suggested as ware
names.

Ok, self-advertising freeware sounds reasonable.

Man, we get a crazy with "ware-types" don't we. lol What about Belarc
Advisor? One could call it self-advertising as well. The output from the
program has the program name in large font right at the top of the
report. The list goes on and on too. ;)

Quite true. The important point is that you don't have to pay $$ to
legally use the whatever-ware.

Why not S(self)adWare then?

Self-advertising was discussed quite a bit at the end of last year. Most
people didn't object to most self-advertising - some forms of
self-advertising were objectionable to some.

The main problem is not finding a good ware name - it's finding a ware
description that imparts *useful* information to the reader. A broad
definition of "brandedware" includes *all* apps and narrowing the
description down to certain types of self-advertising seems to be
difficult.

What then, about what I call "PROmotionware"? That is, software that
advertises the "pro" version within a liteware version.

Our current Adware definition is not crystal clear. Let's discuss this
further in the "[PL] Ware Glossary - Annual Review" thread where
revisions are being considered.

further in the "[PL] Ware Glossary - Annual Review" thread where

"Adware - Has advertising for other products and/or services built into
it. The "price" you pay for the software is having to give up some of
your screen real estate (and your attention) for the advertising. Adware
is often, in reality, spyware (see below.) <---Not included in this post.
Adware should not be recommended as a solution to a software need
in alt.comp.freeware. It should only be discussed in the context of
whether or not a supposed freeware program is in fact adware. Otherwise,
adware should be discussed in the alt.comp.adware newsgroup."

To which I might add, it would be appropriate to discuss it if using it
as an example of features that one is looking for in a true freeware
program.

PROMotionware is software that obnoxiously pushes the PRO version of a
program from within a more limited feature version of that program.

This is opposed to self advertising software - a program that harmlessly
announces what it is or which company it's from via a splash screen
(like Mozilla and Kerio 2.1.5 for instance) or garish title. While not
the best idea, it's up to the software author. In fact, I think such a
definition is totally not worth the time to implement.

Adware can either update or not. As long as it's advertising products or
services other than the program itself (and I don't mean the PRO version
of that program either) then it's adware.

I suppose you could break adware down into further categories like "self
updating" and "non-updating" adware, but why bother? Adware is adware.
It's not freeware.

PROmotionware is skirting that definition. I don't like it and only use
it when nothing else is available or when the PROmotion isn't too obnoxious.

As for that other thread, I purposely avoided getting involved in it.
You're about to further learn the joy of defending the definition of
freeware.

Have fun.

Sorry, but I have my own list of definitions that I personally go by.
The "official" glossary of this group is irrelevant to me.
