Hi,

i am looking for a free firewall that is free for commercial and
noncommercial use. the enivornment
wich it has to protect is a windows 2000 server infrastructure. of course
the best solution would be a
isa server but it is out of my budget. please can you recommend me a
firewall and important is that
it is also free for commercial use...

Thanks in advance

No one can recommend a firewall without knowing how your
network is set up and how you are using it. You should
call a security consultant and have him do an analisys of
your network to determine your needs. A free host based
firewall is NOT going to be a solution for a server. You
should invest in a network based firewall. Security is
layed....not in all one place...

Well I agree with everything the other post said but as thats probably not
what you wanted to hear, I'll point you at smoothwall
(http://www.smoothwall.org/) before you go and download some toy "software
firewall" in the mistaken belief that its any kind of real protection for a
network infrastructure.

You really do need to think about what has been said about looking at your
problem properly however. You say you can't afford something like ISA
server... fine... there are plenty of open source alternatives around for
free (and i've pointed you at one), but have you considered the cost of
*not* protecting your network properly? It's likely to be higher than you
think.

Hi Rob Moir,

thank you very much for your answer. let me "enlight" this a bit. first we
had some linux solutions
build on nat and ip-tables that was not handy to maintain due the fact, that
we were completly
depended on the so called linux expert at our company. but this guy quit his
work. and they elected
me to continue his work. but i havent got a "CLUE" about linux and linux
security. so i need something
to bridge the time i need to learn linux and security related knowledge. why
me, because i programm
in c/c++ and i showed them once that porting code written in ansi c can be
ported between ms win
and linux with a minimum of effort. my mistake....

ok, the firewalls are running, but my boss wont rehire a linux guy. u can
think about my situation.
you can think my weekend is totally ****** up.

reading books from www.tldp.org and still reading and reading and reading...
running a "boxed" linux environment http://bochs.sourceforge.net for
practise purposes...

Thank you very much for the open source solution, you cant know how this
helps me...
