Looking for Boot Log

I have an AMD XP 2500 based system with 1 GB of DDR 400 RAM, WD 120 GB HDD
and a Matrox G450 Dualhead 32 MB Video Card. For the last two months
(roughly), my computer has taken a lot longer to boot up.

During this time, I have not changed any hardware or updated any drivers.
(I have checked and I am running the latest drivers). When I go to the
Device Manager, I do not see any conflicts listed anywhere. I have run
RegClean to get rid of any old items in my registry, that might be causing
the computer to keep looking for something that is not there.

When I start up the computer, it goes through the initial startup which
includes a RAM check and device listings. Next it shows the Windows XP
splash screen. After this, it takes quite a while to get to the desktop.
It only takes a minute or so some days and others take up to 10 to 15
minutes. I thought that I had tracked down the problem a few days ago, then
the next day it took ten minutes after the first splash screen before it was
useable.

A friend who teaches the MCSE course and lives in another city has suggested
via email that the computer is looking for a software program or hardware
device and it isn't there, or the file is corrupted. To rectify this, he
says that I should 'enable boot logging'. Later, I can check the Boot Log
(ntbtlog.txt) to see what has failed to load.

When I did a quick search on this, I had gotten the impression that this
option is available on the startup menu that also includes Safe Mode, Safe
Mode With Networking, and Start Normally. When I went there, I didn't see
the option to select Boot Logging.

Any suggestions where this option might be?

Any chance that this is a poor power supply? I don't think so, but thought
I might ask.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

You can set it in "msconfig". (start>run>msconfig.exe). Look at the other
options in msconfig also.

Thanks Frank,

I will give that a try.
