Is there freeware for such? Or even a tutorial/help site? Or is this kind
of thing just an exercise in patience and persistence?

You could try "Elton's NFO builder 200"...

Wow! Thanks! I've been googling unsuccessfully for a couple weeks now, just
going in circles finding nfo makers that are nothing more than fancy text
editors.

Knowing the right question is always the key to getting the right answer.

If you search this group for recent posts on Figlet and similar
software, you might find something there to do the job for you. It's
basically ASCII art editors you're after.
