Big Hi All,

As my first language is not english I'll use some pictures to help me
to describe what is my problem.

The open comand in most programs give us a file selector...
Like in this picture... http://img506.imageshack.us/img506/8945/
fileselect1es0.png

Since I want to see a file size and type of files, I have to select
one click more than needed.

Question is.

How on earth to "tell" to XP that I want the second setup to become
permanent.

As I remember on W98 exist some program that work with file selector
and gives to users more seting etc.

But, I totaly forgot the name of that program.

Please, can someone give me the link or name of programs who work with
this issue?

P.S. I allredy searched the google, but had no luck :(

Big Regards!

Change your view to Details:
Open Explorer, click on View> Details in the menu bar. Or click the button
in the toolbar to cycle to Details view.

If that setting is not sticking from one instance of Explorer to the next,
get your folder setup the way that you want. Then go to Tools> Folder
Options and click the "apply to all folders" button. This will change the
view in all folders except those with customized views (pictures, music,
etc).

Dear Sharon F,
Big Thanx for your time.
Solution that you writed works, as you said, on Explorer.
But, this is not what I asked.
I talk about situation when...
You are in some program and decide to open an existing document or any
file,
Now a File Selector box comes to show us what to open.
If I set up Folder views like you said nothing changes in File
Selector box.
Regards!

You're welcome and sorry that I did not understand what you meant be "file
selector." The view for those screens is "list" by default. There is no
setting within XP to change that. There may be third party tools or
registry edits that will change to a default but I'm not aware of any.

If I properly understand your question, XP (by default) has some file
extensions tied to the programs which will open them. YOU DO NOT get a file
selector when you double-click it or right click and select OPEN, UNLESS you
are dealing with a Master Folder which has several sub-folders within.
Example: when you open My Documents you have to select a sub-folder to open.
Another example: when you click Outlook Express on your desktop you are in
fact clicking a shortcut which leads to a subfolder within the Main Outlook
Express folder which is msimn.exe which launches the main program. YOU can
set an opening file for file extensions by using Control Panel/Folder
Options/File Types. You can also right click and select Open With to select
from a program list which can be added to by clicking the Browse Button to
find the appropriate subfolder. Hope I am helping you.
