im looking for an application that will convert the old style help files i
made to the new and improved chm files.

can anyone help me?

I know there is a program to convert the old HLP files to RTF, search
for HLP2RTF. But then CHM files are made of HTML files, so changing
from RTF to HTML files might be tricky for software to do.

robohelp can do this task, but the license is way too much money for this
type of work.

Microsoft's HTML Help Workshop can do this, but you'll probably find
that the resulting HTML files need some tidying up afterwards.
