Hi,

where can we found HD DVD or blue ray drives?
ideally the drive support the 2 format...

there is no or lack of info on the net about PC drives.

thanks.

Jerome.

I haven't been able to find ANY HDdvd drives anywhere.
Both Sony and Pioneer make BluRay pc drives, there may
be others as well. (Both are around $US 1000) and the Sony
does not fit in most pc optical drive bays.

You can't get DVD drives or drives that support both HD and BluRay - there
isn't such a creature. As for where to get the drives, there appears to be
many BluRay DVD drives but I can't find a single HD DVD drive.

I did see a couple of news articles about combo drives
possibly sometime late next year. I have seen references to
one by Samsung and another to Ricoh, but I can't locate
either article at the moment.

this one?

but another article (6month later) says they don't create this
product. Same for LG at different dates there is an article about a
combo drive and after there is no product planned.

From what I can read a combo drive result in the price of 2 separate
products.

Well if you think about it, the DVD formats were quite mature before LG and
others really got on the case of building combo DVD writer drivers and
making them common place. At the moment a drive that only does one of those
formats is still priced very highly, and I don't think you'll see combo
drives until the price to manufacture the single drives drops a fair bit AND
it becomes clear that both formats are going to stick around for a while.

There is a chipset though that was developed for optical drives. I
think there just need to be time for the actual drive to be developed.
Coincidentally I think I heard that both formats using the same laser?
Correct me if I am wrong on that count though.

BluRay: blue laser=smaller diameter laser beam
HDDVD: red laser=smaller pits
NO HDDVD writers (even component, much less PC)
Sony and Pioneer make BluRay PC reader/writers
