Hi all,

I'm looking for a good magazine/book catalogue program.
It should have multiple category levels, extensive search capabilities
and so on... but I would be happy already with any hint...

tnx,
H

I recommend Homebase:

<quote>
Abebooks HomeBase 2.3

The most popular bookstore inventory management system just got better.
Booksellers from around the world can use our FREE Abebooks Homebase 2.3
to streamline every aspect of bookselling: from maintaining their entire
inventory, issuing receipts and invoices to selling their books online
through Abebooks. (For Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP) 8.94 MB
</quote>

Earlier (smaller) versions of Homebase are also available. There are
other programs so if Homebase doesn't suit ask again amd I'll dig out
more info.

Susan...would this be good for home use, or is it overkill?

this one goes a little too far for me, I don't really need all the
invoice and clients stuff. Just a good and stable catalogue program
for home use for a book collection of a few thousand books...

If you would happen to know about some other programs, please let me
know.

thanks already anyway,

you might look at Little Lists.. awhile back, someone who inventories
auto parts wanted exactly this program...said it was east to use...

http://www.rkwest.com/archives.shtml

"Little Lists for Windows
Database, lists and labels for home or business

This is a database program designed for users who want to keep things
simple. You can create exactly the kind of list you want, without any
prior knowledge of programming or database systems. Add, view, and
change records, browse through the list, print a columnar report,
envelopes or labels including only the information you want, sort the
records any way you like, add and change data fields. Simple math
functions are also included. Because it can import/export from
dBase-compatible files as well as ASCII-delimited files, Little Lists
can be used to view and manipulate data files created by many other
programs."

"A few of our free programs still think they are shareware. They will
show an evaluation period and will expect you to enter a user name and
registration code.

User Name: Current User
Registration Code: ST35888773343"

Hi Andy,

Homebase is fine for home use - it's easy to use. Just focus on what you
want to do and ignore the fields and functions you don't need. OTOH if
you only have 20 books . . .

Note: I haven't tried the latest version yet - I use a spreadsheet to
catalog books - I have tried earlier versions and have no hesitation in
recommending it if you want a pre-built program.

FWIW I think export capability is a big plus in programs. Homebase data
can be exported - so data you enter can be used in other programs - it's
not locked in.

You *can* just ignore the stuff you don't need. :)

I *know* that of course :-)))
I tried HomeBase but it was just not what I was looking for... I
didn't work intuitively with me either (or maybe the other way around
:-))

now, this one looks very promising, I've had some problems to get it
to run (mainly due to Microsoft MDAC and OLE-DB components). I think
this is exactly what I was looking for... thanks for the hint!

I will check this out too, although I think the above program will be
my choice...

this seems too complicated for me :-)

thanks a lot Susan for your help...
ciao,
H
