all i can really remember about it is that it created dos based arcade
type games (not adventure type) and later had a windows front end added
after it went freeware.

I know what you mean. Gamemaker originally began as a freeware app but
then it split into 2 versions. There is still a free version but I
would consider the free version a Light version because even though it
is free, it lacks the features that the commerical version has.

This happens to many freeware apps which is an author releases a
program for free then the program becomes popular & then the author
decides that since their program is popular they will turn it into
shareware or commerical software.
