Diskmon from sysinternals doesn't work with Vista. I'm getting periodic
extended bursts of heavy disk activity that I'm not yet able to trace
down and I need some kind of tool to help. Task Monitor only shows cpu
activity which is low at these times and memory use which doesn't look
unusual. It sounds like defragging or scanning of some kind but there
are no defraggers running or av or defender scans happening at the time.

Any ideas on something like Diskmon?

You might add columns for IO to your Task Manager. Indexing causes bursts
of IO on mine.

All the IO columns seem to show cumulative quantities rather than simply
showing that a process is currently reading or writing. Ideally I'd
like something that just shows, true or false, this process is reading
or writing right now. But that might be quite a lot to ask. I'm not at
all up on Vista APIs but it seems quite possible that a program calls a
Windows API to do the actual disk action and so the program responsible
might not show up anyway.

Hello,

This functionality is built-in to Vista.

- Click Start
- Click Control Panel
- Click System and Maintenance
- Click Administrative Tools
- Double-click Performance Diagnostic Console
- Expand the Disk header

Very, very nice tool :)

Since you are noticing activity, sort by bytes read or written and watch
what activity is incrementing.

Thanks a lot Jimmy. I'm now running Vista on a new box and had the same
situation so went back and found this thread. Those tools are much more
useful. Found the culprit in seconds.
