Tend to do use mainly the black ink
Looking for something I don't have to fill up too often curently have a
canon i455 2-3 years old and its no longer working
has very small ink cartridges.
I'm guessing out of warranty

Not too worried about print quality more concerned about cost of ink and how
often I have replace cartridges or refill a used
cartridge.

Any advice appreciated including any web links giving independant reports

Could you be considering a laser printer at this point? They are clearly a
lot less trouble than inkjets and you won't have to worry about clogging.
And additionally they are relatively inexpensive and will last a long time
between toner fills. Compared to an inkjet they are much cheaper to run.
However, if you're once and awhile going to do color you will still
probably have to accept using an inkjet, probably with one that has less
tendency to clog. So I'd go with an HP.

For Canon inkjets, I'd say the Pixma line that uses separate carts. I get
around 5 months on cartridge changes.

hi,

would tend to agree with Jan on that one,
HP would be good because blocked nozzles is at a minimum, but
carts are a lot of ££ and lasers are only worth buying if you use it a lot.

So something like an epson D68/D88 would be good,
and £20 RRP for a full set of genuine carts, you cant go wrong
and never heard of one clogging yet in year,
although there about to be replaced so get one quick!

thanks,

Adam

Yes, the i455 was of the era of tiny thimble sized cartridge. This
style is no longer in production. The lowest "i'd" go is the canon
ip4200, which is nothing to sneeze at. Cost for black ink is lowish.
Refill costs are higher than prior generations but likely not as high
as the i455 as you are getting 14ml in each small tank, 26ml of
pigmented black.
If you go with something like the ip1600, you get small cartridges,
which cost even more than the i455 did.

I'd go for a Canon ip4000/ip5000 which are now ip4200/ip5200, the
have two black ink tanks, a large pigment black for text and a smal
dye based black for photos

The text on my ip5000 is as good as my laser printer, crisp and sharp
I have had mine for over a year now and not one single ounce o
trouble compared to the two Epsons I had which was forever ......
clogging

You'll find the Canons very economical to run. Have you tried lookin
at Photo-i http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Menus/reviews_frame.ht
or
Steves Dgicam's http://www.steves-digicams.com/printers.htm

If buying the cheaper Canon's then you'll need do a check on the in
tank because they vary with the cheaper models, one may use
tri-coloured tank - a 3 in one ink tank while another may use fou
seperate ones

I found the ink tanks lasts considerably longer than the Epsons
had... at least three times as long I'd say, if you want the exac
page numbers afraid you'll have to look up as I can't say off hand
At least you can see the ink inside the tanks as they use a clea
plastic tank... they'er not chipped and yes you'll get a low in
warning (yellow triangle) that's when you get new supplies and the
just carry on untill you get a Red 'Ink Out' warning, you'll b
surprised how many pages you'll get after reaching the low in
warning sign

The newer models like the ip#200 are chipped... unlike Epson they ar
used for ink monitoring only as I understand and will be correcte
here.
They use a optical sensor detecting the level of ink as opposed t
Epsons method of '"guessing by estimation"

TMK, they do everything the epson carts do, but are encrypted, and not yet
(publically) cracked.

To a point, then they count ink droplets, or count ink droplets all the
time.
