Looking to buy a used Alps MD-5000 from a guy for $400.
Looks excellent condition and well cared for.
Just wondering if a) that sounds like a good price, and b) about those
metallic silver/gold ribbons. Do they spread any little micro metallic
flakes on later output, in the machine, the rubber wheels inside, like AT
ALL, even the tiniest? I just have SUCH the thing against that shit!

Search for completed auctions on ebay to find out what they sold for.

FYI - There's a brand new Alps MD-5000 on Ebay right now with a buy it
now price of $575 plus shipping from Oklahoma. Sounds like a deal to me.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Ya, did that, but no exact matches.
IIRC, some 1000's, a Mac version, no direct comparison, and not even this
year.

Really?! WTF!! I have a email search set for that! Stupid ebay!

See what I mean about holding value though, they went for $599 MSRP years
ago, which means they likely sold brand new at the time for quite a bit
less.

If you bid on an ALPS on Ebay or any auction site, insist that the printer
be packaged exactly as it was from the factory (i.e. with the cartridge
carrier immobilised), and that all cartridges be removed from inside the
printer and packed outside it. The consensus on the ALPS newsgroup is that
shipping a printer with the cartridges installed will virtually guarantee a
DOA printer. There have been a lot of reports of people receiving damaged
printers because of this.

Thankyou VERY much for the info!
Fortunately, this is an unused model. Still has print head thing on it,
and appears empty in the pics. Guy just took it out for the pics.
I will reiterate this though just in case.
These are hardly a dime-a-dozen, so even insured I wouldn't want to lose
it!
