look-up field & form

I'm new and any help on this would be great: i created a
look-up field in a table, which works fine. But then
having created a form of that table the look-up field
decides to show the (source table's) ID of each record,
not the desired (text) field - while the drop-down box
can be altered by editing the sql query, the box itself
is formatted to take numbers only, making text impossible
to enter. ???!!
