Hi, our win2k advanced server takes a long time to reconnect to the
internet after a reboot, although it always reconnects successfully.
Anyone know why this is?

most likely DNS related.

If the machine is taking a long time at preparing network connections then you most likely have a dns problem

Make sure the dc is pointing to a dns server that it can register its records on.
The most common mistake is to put the ISPs dns as the DCs preferred dns server

The ideal method is to point the DC to itself or a machine running microsoft dns and then setup forwarders out to the IS

are you seeing any errors in the event viewer?

Hi jwb, the machine in question is the DC, and it is pointed to itself
as primary dns server, then to the isp dns as secondary.

jwb is right. However, you shouldn't even have the isp as the alternate
(secondary). Instead, setup forwarders to the isp.

Sorry for the slow response.

In the properties of your network connection make sure you only point to
your local DNS servers. The only place to put your ISP IP address is in the
forwarders tab of your DNS.

Open DNS console
Right click on your Server Name
Select the forwarders tab and add your ISPs IP addresses for DNS.

All your clients (DCs included) should be configured to look at your DNS
servers. When the client tries to resolve an outside address like
microsoft.com your servers will "forward" the request to the ISP to be
resolved.
