Hello, I have 1 out of 4 new PCs that I installed recently that is having a
strange problem,. Anhy time the user opens My Computer or the Printers
window...for example...the window locks and there is a long pause. The user
waits 20 seconds to a minute...sometimes longer, before the machine returns
to normal. The request is processed and whatever screen was opened is
presented as it should be. But the long pauses are driving the user crazy.

The machine is running XP Pro...latest updates. The network is win2000. This
is a small network, with only a handful of users. No other speed issues
related to the network or the individual PCs are being reported or observed.
Just this one PC.

Any help in fixing this would be much appreciated. (I just replaced these
PCs because someone broke into our offices and stole our others...the users
have been down enough...I would hate to have to rebuild this PC and cause
more downtime for this user...so any tips or suggestions at how to overcome
this would be great!!

I'd look at the protocol stack, to start.

Is this a domain or workgroup? If a domain, configure DNS properly:

Then look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from the problem computer, and from one working one, and
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

I just fixed a similar problem by uninstalling Windows Defender. Turns out
that POS was jamming two of my systems pretty badly.

Check to see if following is checked. Open My Computer, selcect Tools, Folder Options. On the view
tab see if automatically search for network folders and printers is checked. Try unchecking to see
if it improves things.
