dear all,

strange problem (to me). I am on XP Pro. I realised
lately that whenever I try to access the desktop folder
from within an application (e.g. when I do an file/open,
or save as and click on the desktop icon to save to that
directory), there is at least a 15sec pause before the
files appear and workable. BUT if I do the same
operations to the other folders such as "my document"
or "favotites" no such issue. This problem persist with
different apps. anyone have any idea?

David, I am experiencing the same trouble. I have slighlty
improved it by removing programs I don't need, defraging
and removing an office 2000 SP1 install that was listed
even though I have Office 2003. Still, I experience the
same thing -- up to 15 to 20 seconds when "browsing" with
the file dialog. Mine isn't only the desktop. If I try
navigating through the file browse dialog starting at the
root C:\ drive, any folder change may take just that long,
even though using windows explorer may be quick.

I see the slowdown in Visual Studio, Internet Explorer,
office, SQL Server Query Analyzer -- basically any program
that uses the Windows browse for file dialog. It's
particularly bad when the dialog is set to filter on file
types, though changing the folder options to all files and
to icons rather than details doesn't do much to help.
Office does not exhibit this behavor when you just click
OPEN and it opens to the MY Documents folder, but it does
when you try to "free navigate" the directory structure.

Anyone have any ideas? My XP Pro is running on a Dell 700
mhz with 500 mb RAM and 40% free space on a defraged HD,
All updates and patches applied, Office 2003, Visual
Studio 6, Visual Studio.NET/.NET2003 as the main programs
installed. I am also running Virus Scanning, McAfee v5.21
with latest definitions (Turning off scanning does not
appear to make any difference).

Todd,

I seem to have cured the problem. I suspect some of the file names
(especially those with a lot of spaces may be related to this,
although I am not sure. However, once I clean up those files (putting
them all in another folder located the desktop) I no longer have the
pause. Will keep experimenting.
