Hi, I've seen a few posts with similar, but not identical, problems to
one I'm experiencing with IE6 SP2. When I type in a URL without
prefixing it with http:// it takes a minute or two to resolve and
navigate to the site. It does get there in the end but is very slow.
I wonder if it's the same problem as others have reported but they have
less patience? I've tried pretty much everything suggested previously
ie. checked the registry, scanned for viruses and malware etc but to no
avail. Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions would be much
appreciated!

Hi,
This may be an autocomplete problem caused by a corrupted History folder.
Deleting the damaged folder should help.

Login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (from safe mode) and delete the affected
History folder from Windows Explorer.

To startup in Safe Mode...
315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222

Login as Administrator- enter the password if necessary. There may not be a
password required.

Go to Control Panel> Folder Options> View> Check "Show hidden files and
folders"

The History folder will be at C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local
Settings\History (The Local Settings folder is hidden by default.) You would
not be able to delete this History folder when logged in as yourself- it's
"In use." You should be able to delete it from the Administrator account.

Also possibly helpful...
Go to Internet Options> Advanced and check "Use Inline Autocomplete."

Hope this helps,

Hi Don,
Thanks for your suggestions, but they didn't help I'm afraid. While
the machine is waiting once you've hit return the disk light flashes a
bit - I'm wondering if it could be a registry problem or something. It
affects all users on the machine not just myself so I'm not
sure....Everything looks ok and I've run one of the update resistry
files that should sort out issues like this one. If not the registry
could it be waiting for something to time out? When I open "my
computer" it takes a similar amount of time to display the drives
available - wonder if that could be influencing things somewhere along
the way.
Regards Rob.

Hi,

I appear to have got it sorted! It seems to have been a problem with
the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service. I've disabled the service
and now there is no delay opening Windows Explorer or in prepending
URL's with http:// automatically. I'm sure it's the same problem as
the other chap experienced (http://www.aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=16583)
because I noticed in his list of services that he was running HP
software that allowed him to connect to a HP printer via wireless like
me - and I'm prepared to bet that if he looks in the event viewer he'll
see that the WIA falls over on startup and every so often after that
(RPC errors in my case).

Hi,
I think that a more thorough search for malware is in order.

Start at http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075 Then go to
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work through the preliminary cleaning
steps then post a HijackThis log to the forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

Be patient. It's a busy forum.

There's a similar problem being worked in this thread
http://www.aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=16583

Hope this helps,
