Anyone know of any options in XP that might be used to
reduce that forced long path garbage shoved down our
throats. I want to see the actual path in a programs
browse or path box, not the crap about my name, a long
documents and other worthless crap in the path. I'm a one
user person using a PC, why can't I tell it that. I don't
need or want to administer anything, I just want my PC
back.

It would be nice if someone could also tell me how to not
be forced into Microsoft's idea of where I want to save
and retrieve things.

Geeze if only Linux had the application software available
for it, I could leave this frustrating pile of trash.

What are you talking about with "Long Paths"?
Are you using the default savce location for Microsoft Word and/or Excel?
That would be in "My Documents", which would then be in "C:\documents and
settings\username\my documents"..

If you leave it there it is by your choice. Personally I make a separate
directory on another hard drive so my paths to my documents look like
"h:\worddocs\myfile.doc" or "h:\exceldocs\myfile.xls". All you have to do
is set some options.

As far as your Linux comment - it's there, you can use it with WINE and
other emulators - or even get VirtualPC and run it on top of your XP or a
parallel install.. etc.

"h:\worddocs\myfile.doc" or "h:\exceldocs\myfile.xls". All you have to do

Thats what I'm looking for, what are those options and
where do I find them. I have two drives divided into six.
I prefer to save and use things on my G: Work drive. XP
wants me to browse to that drive everytime I use it, How
can I tell XP that is my default save drive. I don't want
to have anything to do with their silly scheme. By
sending everything to the my documents, creating folders
in it for every conceivable computer use, they've totally
destroyed any usefulness it might have once had.

Right-click the My Documents icon on your desktop or start menu and select 'properties'. Use the
'Move' button to point the My documents folder to G:\ or G:\docs or whatever you want.

I created a folder called "Docs" and then used the Properties of My
Documents. There is a Move button located there. Clicking it starts
the process of moving all contents of My Documents to whatever folder
you've selected. It will take My Pictures and My-whatevers that are
created by XP along with it.

My Pictures can be moved by a right click drag. Select Move Here when
you release the mouse button. XP will update the relevant registry
entries.
