Hi, our son likes to leave our pc running for long times to download stuff.
But after an hour or two Internet Explorer and Outlook Express will no
longer connect to the server even though the modem 'set-up page' reports
that the modem is still connected to the Virgin Broadband server.

So the pc has to be 'restarted' to get the IE and OE working again. Which is
annoying since the download program has also to be restarted as well. Would
anyone have any suggestions to stop this problem please? thanks.

Dial up connection?
Tools | Internet Options | Connections
Click Settings in the Dial-up section, then click Advanced. Uncheck both
boxes.

Most of your better download managers
http://www.getright.com/
will send a "keep alive" ping to prevent this.

This might prevent it, as well as keep what was downloaded earlier
that can be resume'd.

Opera will also keep a failed download, that can be resumed later if
this happens (read as Free option and a better browser in return).
