I need to support a 6 node Windows XP peer to peer network that is located
several hours away. I realized this could be done by purchasing 7 copies of
pcAnywhere, but this small company has a limited budget. We each have hi
speed internet access. Is there a way to do this using Windows Remote
Desktop ? Are there less expensive alternatives to pcAnywhere ?

Easy...as long as the PCs are running XP Pro...

For multiple machines I recommend either using a VPN tunnel or a SSH
tunnel...

....or a multiple port method...

Personally I recommend the VPN or SSH methods for added security...

If the PCs are running XP Home then look at running UltraVNC through a VPN
or SSH tunnel...

UltraVNC..
Built into Windows XP Professional and Windows 2003 servers -> Remote
Desktop.
Built into all Windows XP OSes - Remote Assistance.

You mentioned remote desktop already - what is your reservation in using it?
