How can I change the logon screen to have a picture of my
choice in the background? I use a program that will do it
for me but I would like to know how I can do this
manually so that when I am at a friend or family member's
PC I can customize it for them. I wouldn't want
to "illegaly" load my software onto their machine. Thank
you for your time.

I think you just go to start\control panel\display. Then click
"desktop". Then all you do is click "Browse.." Then find the path to
wherever a .JPG or .BMP picture file is and load it.

I think after you load it. it will remain a choice in that menu, even
if you change to another desktop-picture-background.

If you are running your display at 1024 x 768, then you should load
JPGs of that size(or larger) for optimal looks. If you are running at
800 x 600, then 800 x 600 pics are good, and it will re-size anything
bigger to fit your screen. I am not sure if it resizes in reverse (?)
- If I can load an 800 x 600 picture into my 1024 x 768 display. It
might, or I might get an empty background color around the smaller
picture.

Thanks Big Mac but I was talking about the Logon screen
not my desktop wallpaper. Thanks anyway.

Whoops sorry, I never registered it in my head - I am the only user of
this computer and I don't get a logon screen.

The default image for the welcome screen is part of an EXE file. Using a
program that substitutes a different image is the best way to perform this
customization in XP. The alternative is directly editing the EXE file and
it's not a recommended method.
