i dont want to disable it so this tweakui program isnt really what i was
looking for. i want to change the email address that it is referring to. my
cousin was using my comp and now it shows her hotmail address instead of mine
(also hotmail).

is there a simpler way to do this? i dont really want to risk this program
stuff because i'm not that good with computers...

Hi

Download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and
when installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go
to Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Will,

*grin*
Following the thread progression (actually - the first sentence of the OP) -
I believe that Ellen does not want the TweakUI solution of disabling the
"Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen".

Ellen,

I am afraid that if you want to accomplish what you seem to desire - you
will have to edit the registry as dictated in the Knowledge Base article you
were given. If you export the keys before changing them - you can always
change them back.

You may want to read a couple of articles on it first - to ease your mind
and wrap your thoughts around it a bit better. Remember - you'll never
learn how to do this any younger than you are now.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/honeycutt_03march17.mspx
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows-XP-Registry-Backup.html
http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,86903,findid,30974,00.asp (Don't
Subscribe unless you want to.)

Know that the essential piece of knowledge you need when backing up the
registry key before a change is..

Right-Click on the folder above where you are about to make the change to a
key.. Choose "Export" and leave the selection at the bottom as "Selected
Branch" and be sure to save it in a location you can get to later.

Delete your cousin's email account from your email reader, if it is in
fact listed as one of the accounts.
To delete an account
In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Accounts.
In Outlook Express, click the Mail tab.
In the Mail Account list, select your cousin's account, and then click
Remove.

Next, make sure that if Windows Messanger (more than likely the
culprit) is installed on your PC, that it is using your account to
sign in and not your cousin's account.
Outlook Express, Outlook, and Windows Messanger are the only supported
email programs which update this hyperlink.

Well, Ellen, the easier way is to use TweakUI, but you stated you didn't
want to go that route. The "real" way to resolve it is to directly edit the
registry as described in that article.
