Papa

I have two computers. They both use XP Home. One thing that I don't
understand (among many things!) is the way the logon works. On one of my
machines the system requires that I click on the user name before the bootup
continues. On the other machine the system just boots up without that step.
Why is the procedure different? Thanks.

Hi Papa,

If there is only one User Account (aside from the built-in Administrator
account and the Guest account), then the computer will automatically boot
into the system without requesting that you click on a User name at the
Welcome Screen.

Another possibility, if both computers have more than one User Account, is
that procedure outlined here (courtesy of Mike Salloway) has been performed
on the computer that automatically boots into the system without requiring
you to click on a User name:

The difference is in your logon settings. Go to Start->Control Panel->User
Accounts->click on "Change the way users log on and off" and select the
appropriate settings to make the systems the way you wish.

Indeed, you're welcome. It's only good advice if it works, though. If it
doesn't, let me know. I'd much rather someone tell me I'm wrong then go on
with the assumption that the advice helped in a given situation.
