I just updated my xp professional and now when I boot the splash screen asks
for my id and passwork. The default id is administrator and the password is
blank. I just hit enter and it goes to the window start p screen. How can
I eliminate this intermediate step since I do not have a password, and do
not want to have one either.
Thanks

1. You should not use the built-in Administrator account for your daily
work. Create a new user account (with administrative privileges if
desired) and use that instead.

2. How to automatically log onto XP:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -

Go to
Start | Run, type "control userpasswords2" Select the account you want to
logon to automatically. Then uncheck the box "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer."

Or do the same thing with TweakUI.

By the way, using the default Administrator account for routine use is a
very bad thing to do. If you accidentally screw that up, you have no way
into the computer.

I too have that problem. When I tried to go the "Run....... " way, it
wouldn't highlight any of the users. The box is already unchecked.

For some reason I have

User Name Groups
Administrator Administrators
ASPNET Users
Guest Guests
Me Administrators

Do I need all those - there is only me who uses the computer.

Thanks in advance

That is normal and should be listed as so. Do NOT delete any of those entries

Run control userpasswords2 again.
Place a check mark in the box next to "Users must enter a user
name and password to use this computer".
Next, in the "Users for this computer:" box, click on the name
of the user you want to logon automatically.
Note: Do not leave this set to Administrator.
Now, remove the check mark from the box.
Click OK.
This should launch the "Automatically log on" dialog.
Make sure the correct user account is entered next to User
name.
Enter your password twice if you have one.
Click OK.
Restart your computer to see if you get the desired results.

Another option is to download and install TweakUI from
Microsoft. TweakUI is
available here.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct Download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->
Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the + sign next to Logon in the left hand column.
Click on Autologon.
In the right hand pane, put a check mark in the box next to
"Logon automatically at system startup".
Enter the name of your user account in the User Name box.
Hit the Set Password button and enter your password twice.
Note: You should skip this step if your account has a blank
password.
Click OK to close TweakUI.
Restart your computer to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck
