Logon Problem

First, my computer is 5 years old and I have had this problem for 1 1/2
years. I tried to fix this before back in April 2006 and have a CompRule
case# if needed to verify - it only lasted until I turned my computer off
which was after about a month and when I restarted it returned back to the
same problem. Anyway here is the issue: When I turn on my computer I get an
error with a yellow triangle that says "The system could not log you on.
Make sure your User name and Domain are correct then type your password
again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case." I have
been able to continue by hitting "enter" but this has prevented me from doing
many things administratively, which I don't really understand because I am
still the owner. I don't know what I did. have Windows XPSP2,
NortonSecurity&AntiVirus. I have run the Malware, Adaware and the rest of
the tests and I am just too frustrated anymore. I would just continue I
guess to let it go except that my daughter is getting older and I feel like I
need to have better control of this now. I am not very computer literate
(Dick and Jane are my speed probably; which tells you my age) This problem
has been the same for over a year but a friend said that maybe it is why I
can't do things like download the Adobe Flash Player and some other files
that my son sends me that I can't see on my email. I don't know but I would
really like some help with this so that I can use my computer properly. If
anyone can help let me know. Thank you in advance. Also, I have trouble
understanding something written unless it is very simple or detailed in steps
- or can be guided through as verbally being done. I appreciate any help in
this matter. I tried earlier in the Computer General Security but when I
responded to the question they never responded back - his question was did my
computer ask if I was a Domain and how to assertain that by going to
Start-ControlPanel-System and this is what I found:

"Computer Name" it lists: Computer Description: (MyChoice), then Full
Computer Name: THOMAS, then Workgroup: WORKGROUP. At the end it says To
rename this computer or join a workgroup, click Change. but nowhere does it
say anything about a Domain but it definately says that in the error message
at the startup of the computer each time and when I try to make changes to my
computer it says I need administrative approval and I am IT, OWNER and DOMAIN
WHATEVER THAT IS but it seems it all stems from the logon. It is so very
frustrating. I have had the same computer since 2003 and is generally pretty
good but with with my daughter turning 14 I am trying to learn more and
wanting to put
protections on websites and I believe I need these controls and I should be
able to have them. Thank you for your help. Thank you.

I probably can't help, but I might be able to add a detai or two.

First, IMO, you should do a computer Restart more often. I know you don't
"have to" but a lot of times after a few reboots XP can heal certain
problems. I usually do a Restart at the end of every day as I finish using
the computer.
First, my computer is 5 years old and I have had this problem for 1
1/2 years.

Has it had XP on it for all those 5 years? Or did the problem start when XP
was put on the machine 1 1/2 years ago?

I tried to fix this before back in April 2006 and have
a CompRule case# if needed to verify - it only lasted until I turned
my computer off which was after about a month and when I restarted it
returned back to the same problem.

Another reason to Restart more often. When something doesn't work, it means
there is something that needs fixing and the sooner you know that the
better.

Anyway here is the issue: When I
turn on my computer I get an error with a yellow triangle that says
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and Domain
are correct then type your password again. Letters in passwords must
be typed using the correct case." I have been able to continue by
hitting "enter" but this has prevented me from doing many things
administratively, which I don't really understand because I am still
the owner.

That sounds like you have a blank password (which is fine) but at the same
time have it set to enter the password and username automatically.
IS the password supposed to be blank?
If it's not blank, did you still intend for the computer to log you on
without asking for your name and password?

I don't know what I did. have Windows XPSP2,
NortonSecurity&AntiVirus. I have run the Malware, Adaware and the

Are the Norton and other spyware tools you have updated recently? These
tools MUST be kept updated all the time or they may not be very useful.
Recent = within the last two days. I check for updates on mine every time I
get ready to run them. This probably has little to do with your problem,
though.
If you haven't run them lately, update them and scan using each one of
them. It eliminates (by elimination) a lot of possible problems when you
want to fix things.

I would just
continue I guess to let it go except that my daughter is getting
older and I feel like I need to have better control of this now. I
am not very computer literate (Dick and Jane are my speed probably;
which tells you my age) This problem has been the same for over a
year but a friend said that maybe it is why I can't do things like
download the Adobe Flash Player and some other files that my son
sends me that I can't see on my email.

That's quite possible. It won't be the SAME problem, but it's another
problem and quite possibly related somehow. It may manifest in several
ways.

I don't know but I would
really like some help with this so that I can use my computer
properly. If anyone can help let me know. Thank you in advance.

Unless someone comes along with a better suggestion you can follow, I'm
going to recommend doing a Repair Install of XP. It's reasonably easy to do
and mostly automated so instructions to run that could pretty easily be
posted. In theory you won't lose any of your data, but you should back it
up anyway; things happen. It will however mean that you'll have to let XP
reload it hotfixes from Microsoft Update. I assume you have auto update
turned on, right?
