Can anyone give me a list of free tools or documentation on how to monitor
and report on a logon process from a windows 2000 and windows xp workstation
to a w2000 domain. I would like to be able to see what is happening on the
server (we have two DCs) and the workstation.

The reason for this is due to an incorrect policy being allocated when
logging on, but if I log off then straight back on the correct policy is
applied, this fault is intermittent but frequent. I must add that we are
using a product called Netloan which has it's own gina and also modifies the
logon process in a way that may be to lengthy to write here, but the Netloan
logs indicate that all is well.

Apologies for the lengthy request, and thanks in advance for any help.

Two good places to start:

1) Enable Account Logon Auditing on the domain

2) Network Monitor or another packet analyzer

You can search Microsoft for what to expect (packets) during
logon.

Possible causes

1) Multiple DCs that have not fully replicated
Group Policy and/or AD.

2) DNS Problems

Tools: Run DCDiag on each DC.
Run NetDiag on affected machines

Hah!

(and see above)

No problem on length, but I would have preferred to know
about the custom GINA in the first or second sentence (or
in the subject) <GRIN>

Thanks for the response, I'll give this a go... and will modify my future
post structure :-)
