I have a Network server running WIN2K. When attempting to logon as
administrator to the domain, the desktop starts to load then stops right
after loading the background. The cursor will still move but the system
accepts no other input including ctrl-alt-del. I have to manually power
down. I also have 3 client machines with win2k Pro on them that are doing
the same thing. On these machines, I can log on to the local machine as
administrator, but not as the user to the domain.

Perhaps the shell is not loading.

Did you try:
Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Task Manager
File/New Task
Explorer
OK

What happens?

I like Paul's idea (first).

How about holding shift while hitting the Ok button
at logon (after typing the password etc.) so that you
avoid almost all startup programs?

How about logging on in CMD line only Safe mode?
(You might then try running explorer -- by just typing
it as Paul suggests.)

Many people never realize that CMD prompt only
allows you to (later) start the GUI if you change
your mind.

Some ideas if you get logged on:

1) Besides startup programs and such, I have seen
a failure of the Shell, i.e., Explorer, GUI when the
Profile is set to small -- more often back in NT4 though.
System Control Panel->Adv->Perform (with the
page file settings - last I looked.)

2) Make another (admin) user if you don't have one
and try logging on in case the Administrator profile
is hosed and causing the problem (might be related
to #1 also)

3) At least you can run backup if you don't have one.
(before proceduing or trying anything destructive.)

4) Try a repair install -- from CDRom, just be sure
you don't format or partition any drives and when
choosing the SAME directory as current, that it
ask you to REPAIR and you choose that....
