I am running Windows XP Home Edition. When I start the computer, I get the
following message:
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain
are correct, them type your password again. Letters in passwords must be
typed using the correct case."

I have used a computer for seven years but I am not technical
trained...particularly in troubleshooting problems. Please explain how I
make sure my User name and domain are correct. These are words that mean
nothing to me.

Also, please give explicit instructions in plain English for a non-computer
type like me. I appreciate your patience and understanding for a
non-technically trained "dunce" like me. Thanks in advance for any help or
suggestions!

from what you've said it doesn't sound like you have ever
had any other accounts on your computer except yours, and
you have never had to log with a sign in name and a
password (i guessing). assuming that you can't log on at
all, this i what i would do:
step 1: restart your computer; as it is starting up,
continually press the F8 key on your key board.
(something may come up about booting your system from a
floppy or something else, just hit the escape buton on
your keyboard and then continue hitting F8) a screen
should apear asking you how you want to start your
computer, there should be several options such as
normally, debug mode, and many others. find the one that
says "start in safe mode" and hit enter.

step 2: your computer will (or should) display a welcome
screen asking you what user you want to sign in as.
there should be one that says "Administrator" (or
something like that), use that one. when your computer
is starting it may ask you about using systme restore.
you may want to try using this to restore your computer
to a time when you weren't haveing this problem. (this is
very easy to do, just follow along) your other option is
to not use system restore and change the log on/off
settings on your computer, this is how.

step 3: first go to your start button and go into the
control panel. one there click on the icon "user
accounts." a new window should open. find where it
says "change the way users log on or off" and click on
it. make sure that "use the welcome screen" is checked
and that "use fast user switching" is NOT checked, then
click on home.

stpe 4: next make sure that there are no more user
accounts then there should be. if there are, click on
them and then click on delete account (you'll probably
want to delete the files too but that depends on if
you've been using any of these other accounts and if you
want to keep those files)

step 5: click on you're account (the one that you can't
sign into) and click on change account. then click on
change password and creat a password that you'll remember
(you shouldn't have to type this in as long as you
have "use the wellcome screen" option checked) or you can
remove the password. (hopefully you wont need any type
of password to do this from the andministrator account
that you're ussing, but i'm not sure because i've never
had this problem, if you do, you may be formating your
hard drive and reinstalling windows xp, but there may be
another way around that, sorry just not really sure on
that one)

The last step is to restart your computer and see what
happens, good luck.
