Logon Message error when logging on to local (non-AD) machine

A Win 2000 Pro/sp4 machine cannot be logged on to, either in safe mode or
normal boot, as the following message (or something to this effect) appears-
"Logon Message: You cannot logon to the machine now because the domain xxx is
not available." This particular machine is not and has never been part of a
domain. Running a Repair from the Win2000 Install CD did not fix the
problem, nor did trying to reset the Admin password with a boot utility.
Ideally we would like to salvage this Win2000 install and not have to do a
complete reinstall of the OS. Any help on this one would be greatly
appreciated. TIA ...

p.s. There are only two boxes when logging on either in Safe mode or Regular
mode - the username and passord boxes, and there is not a third box for a
Domain or to logon locally (even after the Options button is pressed).

p.p.s. Another post from a user that seemed to have the exact same problem
listed installing the drive as a D: drive in another machine and then using
the Load Remote Hive feature of regedt32 to edit the registry - but what
key(s) should be edited and what should the new values be? TIA ...

Perfect, this looks like it will work - thanks!
