Logon fails, kind of

I can no longer log onto my workgroup-only workstation
with either the Administrator account or my Local account
with admin privileges. However, I do not receive an
error message. As a matter of fact, if I purposefully
enter the incorrect password I receive the
typical "incorrect password" error message, but if I
enter the correct password then for a split second I see
the message "loading your personal settings" then it
returns to the logon screen in a nanosecond. Identical
results with Administrator ID and password. I used ERD
commander to view the System Event log and discovered
messages that might be clues to someone smarter than I.
There was one event about COM+ Event System failed to
start... and another about DCOM got error "2%" attempting
to start the service EventSystem... I tried Safe Mode
with the same results and I tried Last Known Good
Configuration with the same results. I checked the MS KB
but this appears to be a first because there were no
matches. Anybody know what I can do to get logged in?

You don't logon to a workgroup - only a domain or local machine, though you can
authenticate against a workgroup machine. Maybe if you give a little more detail
in exactly what the problem is, we can help. Always try to ping a machine by ip
address and name that you are trying to access to determine network
connectivity. Often running netdiag can help resolve networking issues by
running a battery of tests and reporting a pass or fail. Client for Microsoft
networks also needs to be installed and enabled to access any network
esources. --- Steve

Fair point and sorry to mislead. I logon to a local
machine so I don't think it is a networking issue.
Because the OS keeps taking me back to the logon screen
then I can't do any real diagnosis in order to provide
more information.

OK. Sorry I misread. Usually it sounds like profile corruption, but you say it
happens with all accounts so that makes it doubtful. I don't know what the
exact problem is and you already did some good tries. I would first consider a
repair install and if that does not help an upgrade install which will require
you to reinstall service pack and critical updates but leave your data and
applications intact. See the KB links below and read all the way through before
trying anything. --- Steve
