logitech mx510 trouble

My mx510 (which I've had for a couple of weeks now) has started to cause me
some trouble :p

It freezes occasionally when I play games (and -once- it's frozen in windows
(windows xp pro sp2)) for a couple of seconds, then it works for a few
minutes, and freezes again (when it's dead I notice there's no red light
coming from the LED).

I've tried different USB ports, which doesn't solve the problem.
Also, I've used different drivers, both microsft standard and logitech
(mouseware 9.80).

I really someone could help me fix this :D
Feel free to email me about this at any time ([email protected]) :)

That being a corded mouse, it should have the LED glowing at
all times there is power applied, ie - any time system is
running, even while system is off if you have set the USB
ports to use 5VSB by the motherboard jumper ("most" boards
have such a jumper near the port, or it's pin-header,
consult manual for it's location).

Since power to the mouse is suspect, try to isolate where
the fault lies. Might be in the cord - examine cord and
wiggle it around. Check the USB plug contacts. See if
other USB devices exhibit similar problems. Try setting the
USB jumpers on the motherboard to use 5V, not 5VSB. If the
jumper looks questionable, try a different jumper- although
it's rare, I've seen defective jumpers.

Try the mouse on PS2 port.
Try another mouse.

Well, it still freezes when I use the PS/2 port and other mice don't
(Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse Usb+PS/2 and Microsoft Wheel Mouse (Ball)). I
think the problem is the mx510... I'll check the cord like you said.

Would it have this effect if the USB port power setting was set to power
down rather than stay permanently on?

That could also happen if the led was going out (losing power or loose). No
light, no perceived movement. I would not think the light would go out if
there were some type of conflict.

I have one of those and no problems.

Sure, if/when a motherboard can power off the USB ports, the
mouse when then be "off" in every way. Most (all?) board
I've dealt with don't power down the USB ports though,
unless in a higher power managment state (like completely
"off")... or by permanently on did you mean simply that it's
set by having the motherboard jumper set to 5VSB?

Problem solved :)

The cord was actually damaged where it goes into the mouse (image:

When I wiggled it around the LED went out.
I just went back to the local computer store where I bought it, showed the
receipt and they gave me a new one. :)

Thx alot for the help I got here :)
