Logitech MouseMan Wheel not supported?

I have had a Logitech MouseMan Wheel (model M-CW47) for a
couple of years or more, operating perfectly with Win98.
The wheel doubles as a button, and there is a thumb button
as well, both configurable. It's a PS/2 device.

I upgraded to XP three days ago. XP does not activate the
thumb button or wheel button. I installed Logitech's
latest software, but XP won't use it. It continues to give
me the properties dialog for a two button mouse with no
wheel and no thumb button. I do have limited wheel action
with whatever driver MS is using, but no button action. In
fact, the System Manager tells me there is a problem with
the mouse, that the "device cannot find enough resources
it can use (Code 12)," and that I will have to disable
something for the mouse to work. The advanced information
tab, however, says the PS/2 port is the only thing trying
to use IRQ12.

Logitech's tech support carried me through a number of
steps including the obvious, booting in Win98 again (on
another drive), to make certain the mouse itself hadn't
gone defective (that would have been a phenomenal
coincidence). His conclusion is that XP isn't recognizing
the port correctly.

I have grown quite used to having my thumb and wheel
buttons, and don't wish to have to purchase a new mouse.
I'm certain this is an op/sys problem, not hardware. Is
there a fix for this from Microsoft? Are they aware of it?
Or is there something I can do that will fix the situation
without needing a download?

Did you use the drivers that are specifically made for XP? Try the
mw978enu.exe drivers from Logitech's website:
